2025 Gregg Hanour Bar Training:

The Maryland Collaborative is hosting a free, online alcohol awareness training series, led by Gregg Hanour, a former bar owner with 20+ years of experience. This three-part training aims to reduce overservice and underage service of alcohol. Bar owners, managers, and servers can participate in the training series. Participants who complete all three sessions will meet Maryland’s alcohol awareness requirements and receive a $100 gift card. Member schools are encouraged to reach out to local establishments to promote the training using materials developed by the Maryland Collaborative. For more information or help with outreach, contact Kara Skelton (kara.skelton@jhu.edu).

MD-CAS Update:

The Maryland Collaborative is preparing for the 2025 Maryland College Survey (MD-CAS). There are 13 schools participating in 2025. Each school’s data will be analyzed and provided to schools to help identify areas of focus for the upcoming year(s) and inform program development.

Maryland Collaborative Trainings Update:

Kelsey O’Hara shared the promotional materials developed for MD-CAS, including flyers, Instagram story posts, and digital ads. She asked that promotional materials containing the QR codes not be shared prior to survey launch date to prevent frustration with survey inaccessibility. Implementation of Evidence-Based Practices: Member Schools Report Out Member schools shared experiences implementing evidence-based best practices related to alcohol, cannabis, other substances, and related issues on campus. One member school shared their experiences and lessons learned conducting outreach to bars to promote the upcoming 2025 Gregg Hanour alcohol awareness training. This school found that focusing on potential benefits to the establishment (i.e., reduced liability and increased revenue) was most helpful. Another member school shared information about a new well-being initiative, SNACKS, which promotes holistic wellbeing.

Emerging Issues:

Gov. Wes Moore would like to remove the ban on alcohol sales at grocery stores in Maryland. This is an emerging issue that has the potential to increase availability and accessibility of alcohol around colleges throughout the state. This will be discussed more at the Peer Exchange in January.
